Michael Jackson Extravaganza

I'm just going to go ahead and say it. My lil heart must look like the Grinch's because I'm just not wrapping my head around this whole Michael Jackson lovefest going on around me.

Currently, I am sitting here listening (not by choice) to my coworker playing EVERY Michael song on his earphones.

Before I launch into my rant, I'd like to go ahead and say for all the people who will try to label me, I have excellent and diverse taste in music, I don't have anything against him for the child molestation charges (anymore) and I am NOT a hater. That all being said...

YA'LL need to stop!!

Some of ya'll are being absurd. I've ridden in many a car and been in many a club with some of you people and you weren't flipping through your ipod to get to your favorite MJ song, nor were your running to the DJ booth to request "Man in the Mirror".

There is only one person I know who when they played Michael at the end of the night in the college bar got TRUE enjoyment out of it (you know who you are Miss), the rest of us were busy trying to get to the pizza spot or Wawa.

So when my coworker (the same one drowning their sorrows in the music right now) jumped up to tell me Michael had a heart attack last week, I felt concerned obviously. I also knew that there would be some interesting news unfolding when I got home from work that day. Unfortunately things turned out for the worse and I was immeadiately saddened for the loss of life. I can certainly remember new Michael Jackson videos after the super bowl and my mom introducing me to her childhood "boy band" the Jackson 5. However that is where my reminiscing stopped. What has transipred over the past week amongst the general public is just not something that I can comprehend.

There are people getting Michael Jackson tattoos, people listening to him on repeat, people throwing themed parties. I mean the music has been around for 20 plus years yet this man was holding onto to some of his last assets to keep him afloat. Noone was holding up his music the way they are all of sudden now that he has passed. People were scrambling for Beyonce tickets, begging Jay-z not to retire, but I don't recall ever having a conversation about when Michael was coming out with a new album and I for one don't know anyone who had one of the tickets for the 50 concerts. Yet, now everyone is Michael's biggest fan.

I find it to be really disingenuous and EXTRA how some people are acting. You are not obligated to let us now that you are crying or can't leave the house or don't want to go to work today because Michael Jackson passed away. I know its the cool thing to do but I for one will still accept you if you are real with yourself. By all means miss the man, enjoy the music occasionally, watch the concert extravangaza today online instead of doing real work (cause I will be), but all this other crap has to stop.

Well written Kendra! I just have a few comments to make.

I don't think people are necessarily being phony or fan jump-ons b/c now all of a sudden they are listening to his music on repeat. It's like the saying goes, you don't know what you have till it's gone. I for one will admit that I have been playing his music on repeat today and the day after he died (and a few times in between those days), but not because I wanted to jump on as a fan. It was more of a way for me to reminence (sp?) of all the reasons that I am a fan. It's just a way to express my sadness. I've been a fan of Michael for as long as I can remember...wrote him letters and everything. I admit the first song I turn on my ipod has not been Billy Jean or the likes but not b/c i wasnt a fan; I just didn't feel like listening to him at the time.

For example, when my mom passed away, I spent hours just looking at all the pictures that I had of her that were stored away that I NEVER looked at before she passed. And still to this day I have moments when I just look through several pictures (kind of like when I listen to MJ's music on repeat). I know those aren't really on the same level but it's the best example I can give of how people don't necessarily have to do something before someone dies to mean that they love him any more than if they do it afterwards (if that makes sense).

Everyone handles loss differently and while maybe Michael Jackson wasn't an important person in your life, he might be important to others. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of the situation and personally I LOVE the fact that the media is talking about him so much, while others think it should have been over after the weekend of his death. I have been seeking channels that are doing some kind of special on him and his life...even ones that I've seen before. I'm actually sad b/c I know eventually all these reports will come to an end and people will barely even mention his name anymore. Eventually the clubs will not have a 30 minute segment dedicated to his music and I might be lucky to hear one of two songs at the let out. But for now I'm going to milk it for what it's worth.

Sorry that your coworker is annoying you though lol. I hope my comments don't seem negative or rude. It's not my intentions at all. I just wanted to express a different point of view than what you have given.

I DO think the tattoos are a little extra though (especially Willie's who probably has never even met Michael before haha).

Anyway, I close by saying Long Live the King of Pop! :-)

P.S. Interesting blogsite...I'll make sure the spread the word.
